kayak baja - kayaking baja

This winter, join us sea kayaking in Mexico on the Baja California peninsula for 8 days exploring the sunny shores and desert islands of the Sea of Cortez. Known also as the Gulf of California, this area offers stunning contrasts: craggy red desert mountains, cobalt skies, azure seas, and multitudes of desert flora and fauna. Experience the meeting place of desert and sea.

About Our Baja Kayak Trip

Our trip starts in Loreto, a palm-shaded oasis on the shores of the Sea of Cortez, about 600 miles south of the US border. This warm and welcoming town is a delight to wander, visiting the small giftshops, sampling the wares of the local bakery, and admiring the views from the Malecon, the waterfront walkway fronting the National Marine Park of Loreto. On your first night with us, you’ll be staying at a lovely and comfortable hotel located in the center of town.

We meet early on the Monday morning and set off on our adventure. As dawn casts a rosy glow on the rugged Sierra la Giganta (Mountains of the Giants) towering behind Loreto, we travel to our put-in point on up the coast close to our first camp. The next six days will be spent exploring, relaxing and getting acclimated to the weather and to the beautiful landscape.

On a daytrip we ease into our paddling vacation, passing over shallow reefs where rainbow coloured fish dart about and corals and sea fans sway in the gentle waves. Another day will find us paddling past sheer cliffs in shades of amber, ochre, burnt sienna and cream. Here we experience firsthand graphic demonstrations of the millennia of geological forces which are still forming the peninsula of Baja California, creating reefs, and rock spires to paddle through and among.

In the waters on our route or near our camps we'll often spot dolphins playing or feeding. Occasionally we might get to see a sea turtle, manta ray, or one of the several species of great whale that live in this area. During an interpretive walk up an arroyo you'll learn about desert plants and animals, and the marvelous adaptations each has made to live in an environment where only 3 inches of rain may fall in a year. And always overhead are the myriad species of birds that make this tour a birder's paradise.

Each night we camp on beaches or tucked back into the silent desert. At every campsite the snorkeling opportunities are different from those the previous day; we never tire of floating weightless in the natural aquarium of the Sea of Cortez. Our campsites are chosen for privacy, view and remoteness. At some sites, the sunrises are best, while the sunsets at another favorite spot, with the heavens often turning shades of scarlet and peach over the Mountains of the Giants, are not to be missed. Once the sun goes down, the next show begins. Evenings are spent stargazing: the brilliance of the desert skies is a phenomenon which needs to be seen at least once in a lifetime.

Our days are full and adventurous, but not exhausting. We love this route because of its incredible scenery and its desert wilderness. Our trip finishes on Saturday afternoon with a taxi ride back to your hotel in the town of Loreto. You are then free to fly home on Sunday, or to stay on and sample some of Baja’s other eco-tour opportunities.

Let yourself be soothed by the solitude of the desert, enchanted by the wild beauty of this unique natural paradise. The tranquillity of Baja tempts you to relax, explore, and for a time leave winter behind.
