ABOUT THE BAJA CALIFORNIA PENINSULA
| Baja California (see
map) was inhabited for millennia by desert-dwelling native peoples;
the Spanish conquistadors explored it in the 16th century. In the
late 17th century the Jesuits attempted to colonize the peninsula.
But today this region of the Sonoran desert, referred to by the people
of Mexico as "the frontier", remains largely untamed, wild,
open and filled only with the sounds of wind and sea. |
