Hakai Wilderness Area
The Central Coast of BC is a hidden gem just far enough off the beaten path to afford a true sense of remoteness while offering world class kayaking opportunities. A little off the radar and requiring commitment to get to, this area is between the main northern port for BC, Prince Rupert and the end of habitation on Northern Vancouver Island, Port Hardy. The only way into this stark wilderness area is by boat or plane, however the hardy will be rewarded with views of wild and storm-sculpted islets at the edge of the open Pacific, long sandy beaches perfect for combing and a sense of adventure where other paddlers are rarely seen.
Our Central Coast trips rendezvous in Port Hardy where we board the Discovery Passage Ferry on route to Bella Bella and other northern destinations. From our first camp onward our plan is to explore the island archipelagos that run from the Bella Bella area southward. We break up the paddling periods for pit stops, tidepool explorations, interpretive moments
and photo opportunities. Our itinerary allows for two or three night camps with day trips in-between and has the flexibility of a variable pick up point. The days are full, and at day's end you are usually pleasantly tired
but not exhausted.
Weather allowing we will be picked up by water taxi in the area of Cape Caution and taken back to Port Hardy by mid-day on Friday.
