Arctic Wildlife on the Ice Edge
The floe-edge is where the sea ice meets open water. Here in June there exists a unique opportunity to see an amazing amounts of arctic wildlife.
The floe-edge or "line of life" is a feeding zone for Bowhead, Beluga and the elusive Narwhal. There may also be opportunity to see a variety of seal species, Polar Bears and Walrus. Also the month of June marks the return ofmany sea birds, including the Thick Billed Murre, Common Eider, Northern Fulmar, Black Guillemot, and Ivory Gull.
The goal of this expedition is toset up a base camp close to the floe-edge. From there we'll explore the sea/landscape east of Pond Inlet between Bylot Island and mainland Baffin Island. The midnight sun offers photographers a unique chance to capture this amazing environment accented with alpine glow. Opportunities will also exist to cross country ski, hike and possibly paddle along the ice edge.
The extensive range of variables that may be encountered in Arctic travel requires that all participants come with a very relaxed and flexible attitude.
Day 1 - The group flies north to Pond Inlet from Ottawa on First Air. After checking into a local hotel, we’ll have a group orientation and gear check.
Day 2 - We will depart by chartered snowmobile to the edge of the sea ice and set up a base camp.
Day 3-7 - Exploring the wonders of the Arctic! We’ll base camp on the sea ice close to the open water. Opportunities will exist over the next week to cross country ski, hike and possibly paddle on the ice edge.
Day 8 - We will return to Pond Inlet by chartered snowmobile to finish the trip. We’ll then check back into a local hotel for our last night.
Day 9 - Returning to Ottawa from Pond Inlet on First Air.
Price includes: qualified expedition guides, group equipment, snowmobile charter from Pond Inlet, one night hotel before and one after the trip, all meals while camping.
Non Inclusive Service: transportation between Pond Inlet and your home, any meals in town, personal belongings and gear as per ‘Clothing and Equipment List’, trip cancellation insurance, any extra expenses incurred because of delayed departures of flights, any extra expenses incurred because of delays imposed by conditions at hand on the expedition (ice, wind, etc.), any costs associated with an emergency evacuation
