Koluctoo Bay Discovery/ Narwhals of Baffin Island
With the surrounding ocean frozen for eight months a year, sea kayaking in the Pond Inlet area is a rare and wonderful opportunity. July is usually “break up month” when the pack ice begins to disappear and open water makes a welcome return. August is normally the only month in which you can enjoy sea kayaking and view some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the Arctic. The sea kayak provides a marvelous way to explore these polar waters and fully appreciate in detail the land and all that it contains.
In this area, Narwhal or "Unicorns of the Sea" gather in large numbers in the deep glacier strewn fjords around Koluctoo Bay. The hushed silence of this subtly bold landscape is broken only by the sound of sea ice moving with the tides and the blow of a surfacing Narhwal, a marvel for the senses. Beyond the serene kayaking opportunities and the potential of Arctic Char for dinner, our group will have time to explore the area on foot as the open landscape affords easy hiking access to the surrounding countryside and areas of cultural interest. Our intended plan is to start in the Koluctoo Bay area then travel north into Milne Bay.
